Hi Josephine - thanks. I paint with acrylics, what medium do you use? It began in 2020 as a pandemic hobby. I paint nearly every day for 1 to 4 hours. I tried 4 different sizes of canvas before landing on the size that works best for most of my paintings. What subject do you like to paint? N
Thank you for replying. I actually tried watercolour and I later got acrylic paint. So far, I have been using a sketchpad that has A4 sized canvas to first see what I can do. I only started months ago even though I haven't been consistent.
If you painted 1-4 hours nearly everyday, then I have to borrow that tip and find a proper schedule that works. Were you trying things at random or you had a proper guide to work with?
The reason I work nearly every day is because I want practice, practice, practice in order to improve. Kind of like playing a musical instrument. I'm fortunate in being retired, and in having a room in our house that I have set up a corner of for my painting. The light is decent in the afternoons and I can leave my table and supplies set up.
Your question if I had a proper guide to work with: I studied art history in college, albeit 40 years ago, but my love of painting has persisted. So I brought some instinctive affinity for color and space to my work. I began by getting a beginner art supply kit that included a table easel, basic brushes and about 40 small tubes of paint. I knew going into it that I wanted to highlight the beauty of nature and wildlife, and avoid people and man-made stuff. I wanted to do people portraits but found that to be quite difficult, I had trouble getting skin tone colors right and getting depth of features correct. So now I am taking an online course in portrait painting== it is really helpful.
Thanks a lot, Nancy. I'd do well to get an easel too. I haven't made up my mind on what exact kind of painting I'd like to get into but I know I love marvel, animals, nature and some still-life. Your answers have been helpful and for this, I am grateful
You paint so good!! I'm just beginning to learn painting. Can you share tips for a proper beginner like me? 😭
